The Story

190717 : We left the Inn at 11.30am because we were so exhausted the evening before having walked about 9 hours because Prof Sweet Tooth was excited to see Amsterdam. I am pretty sure he was excited walking inside Red Light District! We took the train to Centraal Station, and the tram to Rijksmuseum. The museums are located in the area called Museumplein. This is where the word - I AMSTERDAM is located. The famous word where you can see everyone climbing on top of it to snap a good shot.

First, we went to grab a small bite in one of the food stalls located outside the Museum. Of course, being a tourist area, please do not expect cheap stuff here. Greedy me wanted to try the nutella waffle and began to realise it is very sweet after eating half of it. Chocolate is just so tempting, you know.

We hurried to the Museum because it closes by 5pm. We reached there at 1.30pm, and saw the massive interior. The place is huge. There were many security guards at every exit. Well, considering this is a museum with many famous paintings and sculptures, every door is an opportunity.

The Rijksmuseum (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈrɛiksmyˌzeːjʏm]; English: National Museum) is a Dutch national museum dedicated to arts and history in Amsterdam. The Rijksmuseum was founded in The Hague in 1800 and moved to Amsterdam in 1808, where it was first located in the Royal Palace and later in the Trippenhuis. The current main building was designed by Pierre Cuypers and first opened its doors in 1885. On 13 April 2013, after a ten-year renovation which cost € 375 million, the main building was reopened by Queen Beatrix.

In 2013 and 2014, it was the most visited museum in the Netherlands with record numbers of 2.2 million and 2.47 million visitors. It is also the largest art museum in the country. The museum has on display 8,000 objects of art and history, from their total collection of 1 million objects from the years 1200–2000, among which are some masterpieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Johannes Vermeer. I noticed that the ticket is valid until 31st August. That is about 1.5 months of validity. Prof Sweet Tooth thinks I misinterpret that statement. His view is that the ticket is a one-time entry but valid until 31st August. I am pretty sure he got his interpretation wrong. I mean, he is using Swenglish. Sometimes, Swenglish is just weird. Plus, I saw other visitors who visited the toilet which is located outside the gate scanner and the security guard has to scan the ticket again for the visitor to enter back inside the museum. That is why I am pretty confident it allows multiple entries until the said date.

Behold some of the paintings and art objects in the Museum. Each one has its description. Since we lacked time as we had 3.5 hours only to explore the museum, we did not read every description.

The most famous painting in the museum which is guarded by 2 security officers. "Nightwatch" by Rembrandt. Well, I have to admit I was not familiar with Rembrandt and the only Rembrandt I knew was the group who sang the soundtrack for 'FRIENDS'. I know, it is so embarrassing. When we went to Rembrandt Square the day before, Prof Sweet Tooth asked me if I knew Rembrandt. I said - Yeah... and my voice trailed off. Haha! Anyway, there were so many tourists ooh-ing and aah-ing at this painting.

Can you see Rembrandt name on top of his painting? I like the interior design of the museum.

Can you guess what is this? It is a flower pot, i.e. you can put flowers in each spout. I like it. I know it costs a bomb at the souvenir shop.

The library in the museum. It is being used. We have to be quiet when we stood at the top admiring the library.

The description of this sculpture - Two ugly men.

Of course, a souvenir shop is not complete without women accessories, and handbags. Odd to put this on sale in Rijksmuseum shop. I mean, are there tourists who actually purchase them.

Time to explore Amsterdam Town again!
