Pulau Ketam : Excellent Seafood

My wish to visit Pulau Ketam has finally come true! Yay! Excellent friends I have to make my dream come true!! I have been harping to myself for a long time to visit this island, but I never got around to going there, mainly because, I was not sure of driving or taking the train - the train takes forever or driving on uneven road. Pulau Ketam is in the state of Selangor, the same place where I was living, but being an island, I know I need to drive quite a distance to reach the jetty.

Most of my friends have been there, and they told me that it is a quiet place, not much of activities, dull, boring, disappointing, go there for the food ... but all these comments have not stopped me from wanting to visit this place. I still want to go there and decide the place for myself.

01012013 - On this New Year's Day, the 7 of us drove in 2 separate cars to Pulau Ketam. Ketam means crab, and Pulau means island. So, Crab Island it is! I am expecting lots of crabs. None of us knew the route, but we just followed the directions towards Klang.. and soon after we saw the signboard that states Jeti Pulau Ketam. And then, I realised being the driver, it was just a straight road on Federal Highway towards Klang and till the end of the road, no turns needed. Seriously, the end of the road. At the end of the road, you will see the sign "Selamat Datang... Pelabuhan Klang". You can see in the photo below. We parked in the parking lot of the train station. Yes, I did mention the option of taking the train - the stop is KTM Pelabuhan Klang. Since it was a public holiday, we need not pay the parking fee! Yay! From the parking lot, it was a 20m walk to the jetty.

There was a counter to purchase the boat's ticket. The schedule is not relevant though, because it was a 'full, then move' boat. It costs RM7 for a one-way trip. Kids get it for RM4. Upon purchase of the ticket, we heard that there was a boat ready to move, and it was 12.45pm. If you see in the schedule, there is no 12.45pm time.

On the boat, there were ticket sellers too. So, you need not buy your tickets from the jetty. The co-ticket seller will tear your tickets. There is a television to entertain the passengers. I was watching "No Way Out" - wrestling programme. Gosh, the wrestlers are so rough, huge and loud.

The journey took 30 minutes. At Pulau Ketam's jetty, there were many banners of accommodation. Seafood restaurants were in abundance. There were bicycles for rent at RM5 per day. I would said it's not a worthy deal because the place is small, and there are limited things to see. We walked through the market. Well, not a huge market. We stopped to get a glass of sugarcane drink, and my, it was expensive at RM2 for a glass.

In one of the houses I saw, there was this famous house that apparently is famous in selling fishballs. 50 balls for RM30. I am not sure if that sounds cheap.

The nasi lemak in this place has small prawns as one of the dishes. Different!

We had lunch at one of the seafood restaurant. We had lala (clams) cooked in egg, squids, omelette, prawns, mixed vegetables and crab. The crab was yummy-licious and was priced at RM35 per kg. My friend said that this is cheap. Okay, so we all know now that I do not frequent the market often. Altogether, lunch came to RM155.

After lunch, we stopped at a stall that sells fried ice-cream. The ice-cream in wrapped inside a dough. Take out whichever ice-cream flavour you wanted, deep fried it for less than 3 minutes, and it is ready to be eaten. Although deep fried 10 seconds ago, it became cold quickly as there was ice-cream inside. One fried ice-cream costs RM2.30.

This is a sample of a name card for one of the accommodations. RM45 per night. It is cheap, I agree, but there are limited things to see. There is a fish farm where you can go to. Lots of seafood to indulge in.

Finally, time to buy souvenirs. Fridge magnets!

Look, the crabs are quite huge.

We took the boat back at 4pm, and was back at the mainland by 4.30pm. Earlier, we had bought the boat ticket back when we purchased the boat ticket to Pulau Ketam.

I have been to a couple of fishing village - Kuala SepetangTanjung Sepat, and Kukup. By far, I enjoyed Pulau Ketam the best. Both Kuala Sepetang and Tanjung Sepat are comparatively smaller, hence not much to see. Kukup is too commercialised to cater to the demands of the Singaporeans, and the seafood is disappointing.

My verdict of Pulau Ketam - Fun with the right company!

Hello. Unfortunately I don't know the name of the place. We just stepped into a random place.
