I always make it a habit to visit any market in whichever town I am in. Any new places. The first must-go place is the market! That is where you learn more about the locals, and see the food they eat, and maybe find interesting stuff.
In Miri, on a fine Saturday morning, I went to the Tamu. Tamu is the local word for market in Sarawak. It was quite a big place, as it is very long. The taxi driver that brought us there tells us to look out for preserved fish. And yes, we saw many of them. And also shark meat. Sigh.
The shark meat which I sighed about. It is already dried and preserved.
The walk around the morning market took us about 30 minutes, and next, I was looking for the Fish Market. Everyone we asked tells us it is walking distance from the Tamu. And so walk we did. I read that the Fish Market is situated very close to a Chinese temple. We found the Chinese temple in about a 5 minute walk.
The Fish Market is situated exactly next to the Chinese Temple. It is not a huge fish market. I was stopped by a sight of one of the sellers slicing a stingray. And it sells for RM12 per kg. He does cut it pretty quick. In about 15 minutes, he sliced the tail, peel off the skin, and displayed the meat for sale.
Then, I see sharks again. Hammerhead sharks too! Selling for RM6 per kg. It is bad enough they are selling the sharks, the least they could do is priced them higher. I have never encounter hammerhead sharks during my dives yet, and it is sad to see them in the market.
I remembered I took this photo because the seller has fenced up around the fishes. Because some of the fishes were still alive and jumping around.
