The first time I stepped into Miri, it was in 2009 and I was on my way to Mulu to climb on the Pinnacles Summit Trail. The second time I came to Miri, it is for work. I was in Miri on the first week of February 2015. During the available time we have, my colleagues and I venture to the 'must-see' places of Miri.
The first place we saw was during an evening in a weekday after work, to see the Night Market or locally known as Pasar Malam Seberkas. This night market is open from Thursdays to Saturdays. It is a long stretch of stalls selling from grilled fish to layered cakes and fruits and also clothes and also handcraft. Notice that my English has significantly deteriorated with very simple vocabulary and conjunctions used. Haha!
I bought myself grilled fish for dinner. It costs RM15. Yes, it seems expensive, but maybe because I don't sound local. But it is a huge fish for me, I mean, the flesh was sort of never-finishing.
Do you see the price of this handcraft? It states here RM68 but when I went to Miri Handcraft Centre (which will be blogged soon), it is sold for half of the price! By the way, this is made of beads and this is a holder of any sorts.
For appetizer, I bought Kebab which is chunks of grilled or roasted chicken or beef but this is wrapped in wheat flour skin. RM2 and I had it immediately because I was so hungry and the smell of all food is overwhelming for me. I have no willpower.
Then, I saw the local dish - Mee Kolok. Abundantly available in Sarawak. I tried to find the meaning of the noodles but it is easily translated as dry noodles and best served with soup or gravy. The reason I bought this noodle is because I love how they wrapped the noodle in the plastic. It is so round and I want to learn how to wrap like that. Plus, it only costs RM2. Unfortunately, the noodle was really dry and stuck to each other as I unwrapped the plastic.
Then, we saw the most humongous burger ever! Disclaimer - the word 'most' and 'humongous' cannot be used together. It is redundant. Because humongous means extraordinarily large. But I am just trying to emphasise that the size of the meat patty is so huge! Check out the size comparison of the normal and super huge meat patty in the following photo.
I squealed in delight when I saw bananas selling for RM1! It is so cheap! I cannot believe my eyes. I bought the RM1 comb of bananas.
Of course, one must get the must-have layered cake! A specialty of Sarawak! And not to forget that they are so colourful, and anything that is colourful attracts my attention and deserve to be bought. Colours also mean the different flavours. Strawberry, chocolate, cheese, blueberry. It is various! I bought a piece back for RM15. There are stalls that sell for RM10 too but I bought the RM15 because for one reason only - I love the colour of it. The stall owner wrapped it in aluminum foil to preserve the coolness. Put in the fridge and it can last for a month.
Dinner was not too expensive with the kebab (RM2), Mee kolok (RM2), grilled fish (RM15) and a comb of bananas shared among the colleagues (RM1). I did buy a stick of 3 prawn fritters thinking it was real prawn for RM1, and amazed how cheap it was as exclaimed by my colleague but when I bit into the first prawn fritter, it was actually made of flour. Lesson learnt - how could prawn be that cheap anyway?
