Labuan : Part 2 - The Chimney

Given a day in Labuan, my colleagues and I decided to go to the Chimney after our food hunt in the Farmers' Market. There are limited attractions in Labuan, other than the main shopping of duty free goods. To get here, we took the bus from the bus station which costs RM2.80 for about a 45 minute bus ride. It seems like 45 minutes and because of the sunny day, I felt like sleeping in the bus. There is no entrance fee to enter into The Chimney.

Here is a brief history on The Chimney taken from Attractions in Malaysia:

This chimney was built in the year of 80's and the usage of it is still a mystery. It is stated that there is no traces of smoke and whatsoever that indicate that it works like any normal chimney. However, the locals believe that it was used as a ventilation shaft. Still, there are many people that have other thought. Some say that it is just an unfinished mansion built in those days while others claim that it is a light house to be. Until today, no one knows the right purpose of this chimney and this is why it is such mysterious. This also acts as an attraction which attracts tourists around the world as well as locals. It has a height of 106 feet and it was built with stacks of red bricks.

There is a museum that states the history of the Chimney and a small tunnel built inside the museum to get a feel of walking inside a coal mine tunnel.

We spent about an hour here. My colleague suggested to visit the Bird Park which is just 50metres down the road, but I was not too keen as I have seen the Miri Mini Zoo just the day before. Oh, I forgot to mention, I was on a work trip and was in Miri the week before, and the following week, I was in Labuan. So, there is not much keenness to visit the Labuan Bird Park.
