The Story
03082024 : Today, we leave the countryside of Ebenau and hike towards Faistenau to take a bus back to Salzburg town. We are leaving Salzburg today for Vienna - our next destination. Of course, breakfast first - and similar like yesterday, we are the only guests in the accommodation and we have the dining room to ourselves with a lovely spread. We were so happy to see the basket of bread. The hostess asked if we wanted boiled eggs and we said yes.

What a great deal, I thought - paying EUR80 for the room including such great breakfast. But I was wrong. When we checked out, the hostess told us it is EUR80 per person. This is what happens when one books via the telephone and there is no email confirmation, not forgetting the preferred language for the hostess is German. Miscommunication is bound to happen. Oh well, we had no choice but to pay. Lesson learnt.

After breakfast, we started our hike at 8.50am towards Faistenau. We aimed to take the 11am bus. Or latest 11.30am. It was a very lovely walk as it was not hot. It was cloudy and the mountains were covered by the clouds. I did not mind that, honestly, as we could enjoy our hikes without struggling under the heat with our backpacks.

We reached Faistenau at 10.20am. 30 minutes earlier than planned.

We decided to board the bus from Faistenau Mechaniker Wörndl bus stop as it was nearer to us. Initially, we planned to board the bus from Faistenau Ortsmitte at 11.01am but we needed to continue walking.

Faistenau Ortsmitte bus stop is 9 stops away from our current bus stop. We managed to catch the 10.35am bus 155 and reached Salzburg Hbf at 11.20am. We alighted at the last bus stop - Salzburg Hbf.

At our last stop, we decided to have bosna from a kebab stall for lunch.

According to Wikipedia - Bosna is a Austrian fast food. It resembles a hot dog, consisting mainly of a Bratwurst sausage, onions and a blend of mustard and/or tomato ketchup and curry powder (Curry ketchup). Bosna is made with white bread and is usually grilled briefly before serving.

After lunch, we strolled towards the train station. We had plenty of time so we detoured to a convenient store and bought some chocolate wafers. Austria has a chocolate wafer brand - Manner Mignon, which is so addictive! It is so good. We bought chocolates for our train trip. I love the information service in Austrian railway - German and English! We understood what was being said. What a large difference from the German train service where everyone is expected to know German.

A travel companion suggested that we try a private train operator - Westbahn, instead of ÖBB. I agreed as it is nice to try a different train and make comparison. It is a double-decker train so we purchased tickets for the upper deck. The train arrived at 1.35pm, delayed by 13 minutes but we arrived on schedule at 4.22pm. We were informed on the delay when the information was announced in English too.

I had very expensive coffee on Westbahn train - EUR3,30! For a small cup. It was from a vending machine too.

Upon arrival at Vienna train station, we headed to our accommodation and was surprised to see the yummy chocolate wafer on our beds. Nice! I booked the accommodation as it has laundry services but the building has many floors and many apartments on each floor but there is only one laundry room at the bottom floor with only 3 washing machines. Max 4, I guess. How are those washing machines going to service all apartments? Especially when we realised that the building has many Airbnb guests rather than residents. So, we handwashed our clothes. Good thing that there is a electric towel rails and our clothes dried very quickly. It was very hot outside so we started the air-conditioning. One travel companion set the air-conditioning at 16 degrees! That was too cold for me.

We looked for a dinner place. I had boiled beef which was surprisingly yummy. With no plans for the evening, we walked around town, taking in the sights.
