The Story

070915: After Passerrelle d'Holzarte walk which ended by noon, we continued the drive to Gorges de Kakuetta. It was just a 30 minutes drive to our next tourist attraction. The view is, as usual, gorgeous! Gorges de Kakuetta has a length of two kilometers. There is a waterfall of twenty meters and a cave at the end of the course. The place opens from 8am to 4pm. In total, we took 3 hours to walk to and fro, including me taking photographs and careful walks on slippery stones.

Upon entrance to Gorges de Kakuetta, we were greeted by a beautiful green lake. So serene. This is where I saw a different toilet where one don't flush, but pressing a pedal 5 times to move the waste away in cyclical manner. Can you imagine what I describe? It doesn't smell, which was surprising.

We walked through the tunnel, and saw an amazing view of the start of our 2km walk. I snapped so many photos at the initial start of the walk. The nature is breathtakingly stunning. (I need more vocabulary to describe nature in Pyrenees). There was a small stream that flows through. We walked on a narrow pathway but it is wide enough to accommodate 2 persons for a two-way traffic. However, sometimes it needs one to give way. One has to be careful especially when it rains because the wooden platform will be slippery.

The huge waterfall which was almost at the end of the walk. We walked behind the waterfall and did not get wet. Then, Prof Sweet Tooth saw more pathway and a sign that says - To the Cave. Prof Sweet Tooth loves caves, and we walked on.

Ta-da, the cave. The end of the walk! That took us 1.5 hour. We walked inside the cave and it has a small space. There was no further path inside.

After Gorges de Kakuetta, we headed on to Pau and reached in 2.5 hours. It was 7.45pm but thank goodness for long hours during the day. We were so hungry after our walk in Gorges de Kakuetta and bought ourselves a humongous pizza which cannot be eaten in the restaurant. Apparently, the restaurant has no plates for extra large pizza and one has to take away. This is so weird. I suppose presentation to them is important.

We ate in front of Chateau de Pau. It was already closed. The pizza was yummy for the first 4 slices, and after that, we were too stuffed. Pizza cost - EUR15.40.

The last photo is Chateau de Pau at night. We did not realise it turned dark though after finished with our pizza. Then, we drove on to Grottes de Bettharam, thinking we could park in the parking lot but there is a gate which is locked. So, Prof Sweet Tooth parked by a river which was 500m away from the entrance of the gate. As usual, I did not realise there was a river until I woke up the next morning.

I tried to went a little further on in the cave at the end of the Gorges de Kakuetta, but couldn't walk long because it was obvious that this was very distant from nearest toilet. ;-)

It is obvious that the Gorges is a rest from an ancient time with much richer flow of water. And a few years ago, a heavy rain made a huge flooding that forced mud and stones from the other stream beside the tourist-friendly walkway to flush out in the Little nice green lake in 1991. The flood was so big so the lake was filled with mud and stones, and had to be digged out the following years.

I also wonder what it was a kind of odd animal we saw flying in the bush? Smaller than a bird, but with a pipe-shaped nose. And it also had big eyes. First I thought it was something that had dropped to the real world from a fantasy movie. A very odd creature. It was also hovering in front of the flower on the bush. I wish you had a photo for Birdie Sister.
