Here is a summary of what is spent on Day 6.

Route: St Jean Pied de Port -- Larrau (stay the night)

Must-Incur Costs :

(1) Auberge de Logibar (accommodation in Larrau) - EUR13.90 per night per person

The Story

060915: The drive continues from St Jean Pied de Port onwards to Larrau. The time estimation is 1 hour but who can take 1 hour when the scenery is just begging us to stop to snap a million photos. We stopped at a random hill and saw cows and sheeps grazing the grass. Trust me, if you were there, you would have stopped. Admire the mountains. It was not windy, and hence, we could stand there long enough and enjoy the cool fresh air.

As we drove further on, Prof Sweet Tooth saw a trail (it is interesting how one can notice a trail while driving) and decided to stop to explore. The route name is Liaison Bigoza. Can you see the red car parked at the bottom and the zigzag route one has to drive along Pyrenees route? The view was fantastic from the top of the hill. It was not too cold for me either because we were walking uphill. The trail is not too difficult either but Prof Sweet Tooth did caution me by saying sentences like - Please don't walk too close to the edge because it will be too difficult for me to pick your body up. Then, I see him walking along the edge. Talk about pot calling the kettle black.

Prof Sweet Tooth stops to see if I was following him because I was constantly stopping to take photos. How could I not?

After exploring the short route and noticed the sun is going to disappear soon, we continued the drive and passed by a camping site where we saw a birdwatcher's hut. Well, it is actually a small building that showcase information on birdwatching in Pyrenees. Unfortunately, they were all in French! I was keen to get some information for my sister who does birdwatching but the staff tells me the birdwatching done in Pyrenees is conducted in French, and broken words of English if they must. Here is some information I got from the staff for anyone who is interested to volunteer - Birdwatching activity conducted from July to November. One bed in a shared cabin - EUR28/day. Birdwatch - EUR14 per day.

Oh, they have an actual size of a lammergeier hanging on the ceiling. This raptor is found in Pyrenees (for Europe) but on the Spain side.

The drive continues, and Prof Sweet Tooth starts to smell something odd in his car. Since we were driving in zigzag, the brakes were used frequently, and he was fearful for his car brakes. So, we decided to stop by the roadside to rest the car brakes. While waiting, we cooked canned pea soup. It was absolutely yummy with a beautiful location. Drinking hot soup with the view of the mountains.

We reached Larrau town about 8pm, and we were hoping to find some empty rooms. We knocked on a 'Bed and Breakfast' but the old lady at the door tells us the place is fully booked. It is expected to have fully booked rooms for such last minute search. So, we drove to Passerelle d'Holzarte carpark, which was about 5 minutes' drive away from Larrau main town. This place is a must-see place for its suspension bridge. We were going to see it the next day, and so we thought it is much easier that we parked here instead. Then, we saw a building next to the carpark that turned out to be a Bed and Breakfast - Auberge de Logibar! We were so lucky! 1 person for EUR13.90. It was a good and affordable price.

It is good there are plenty of places were one can stop the car. But one has to be careful as there could be stones left after camping vans.
