The Story

060915: The drive continues on from Espelette to St Jean Pied de Port and it was just a 40-minute drive. Please feast your eyes on the photographs of the landscape that we encounter on the route. I feel that I need to stop each time because the scenery is just amazing! We parked and before we started our walk, we tried a peach that we bought in Bordeaux. It was so sweet and yummy. We should have bought more. Even my friend who was initially skeptical about it, love it too.

This is St Jean Pied de Port. The town is made up of one main street and encircled by a stone wall. We saw lots of tourists here. This town is the starting point or you could say, the pilgrims' last stop before starting the mountain crossing to Camino de Santiago de Compostella, also known as the Way of St. James.

I bought macaroons here. They are so different from the ones I have ever tasted. The texture felt like coconut flakes. There are chocolate, coffee, chilli pepper (from Espelette), original and one with rum flavours. I took the 10 macaroons for EUR5. My friend - "It is expensive". Me - "It is French macaroon - we have to try the local food". He halfheartedly paid.

We walked up to the Citadelle, and saw a beautiful panaromic view of the old houses.

Then, time to look for food! Oddly enough, most cafes did not serve their main dishes (steaks) during the day and suggest us to come back by 7pm. I wonder if it is because the place is packed during the evenings only. Anyhow, we decided to have pizza instead because we could see many having them. I also did see everyone having a cup of coffee. A very small cup. I was curious and decided to place an order for one. Big mistake. It was a very bitter cup of espresso (which tasted like cough syrup) but I finished it regardless. We ordered the most delicious pizza ever - cheese, tomato and Spanish ham with an egg in the middle. It was so juicy and finger-licking good. I wished we had the funds to order one more. EUR9.60. So worth it. But coffee not worth it.

Now, we drive further into the mountains.

The pizza at the Cafe de Paix was the closest to heaven one can get on heart. One must althugh know that the menu is limited in the middle of the day as some restaurants don't have a chef on duty until later on in the afternoon in France. Maybe that goes for most restaurants, I don't know. I am a rare bird on those places.
