Krabi : Part 6 - Morning Market Maharaj Soi 9

03052014 - Today, we are off to the Morning Market. I researched on the places to go to in Krabi and this is one of them. It opens at 6am and the activities slow down by 9am. So, off we departed from our hotel at 630am Thailand time. It was about a 8 minute walk to the Market. Along the way, we saw 2 sculptures - the elephant and the saber tooth tiger. According to the plaque on the sculpture (for the tiger), a 6cm fossil of the tiger was found at Lignite coal mine in Nuaklong district in the Krabi province in 1990. Hence, the sculpture. I couldn't find anything on the elephant.

We saw the Shell Petrol Station and know we were very near, because the market is just behind the petrol station. Well, no credit is given to me, because I just followed my friends who have a better sense of direction than me.

The Market is huge and clean. It is departmentalised - food and the floor is dry, fish zone, vegetable zone, meat zone, dry products like spices, clothes and household items, non-halal zone and the fruit zone which is outside the market.

Guess what is this? This is sambal - chili paste. Sambal is typically made from a variety of chili peppers and secondary ingredients such as shrimp paste, fish sauce, garlic, ginger, shallot, scallion, sugar, lime juice, and rice vinegar or other vinegars - as explained by Wikipedia. I love the smell of spices as I walked pass.

After walking around the Market, we have our breakfast. I had fried rice with tiny shrimps (they are sweet and tasty) for THB40. My friends had porridge for THB30. I love how the food is arranged for display. So neat and colourful. My roommate had tea for THB10. So economical. Whereas the rest of us tried the coffee. I figured the coffee is famous as I see many people queued to buy the coffee. I had a small cup for THB15 whereas the larger one is THB20. Affordable!

In the market, I noticed banners for 'No Styrofoam'. And I thought it weird because the food sold was packed in styrofoam until my friend pointed it out as Sitex Foam. I just googled and I cannot find anything. I guess there ought to be a difference, or it will be a huge contradictory to the campaign.

See what I mean about the food on display. Neat, organised, meticulous, standardised and colourful.

We were back to our Hotel by 9am. And here, you can see the reception counter. Pretty spacious, eh.

Excellent morning market outing in Krabi!
