Shangri-la : Part 21 - See you, Kunming!

31 Oct 2012: Today is our last day in China. Our flight back is at 1.40pm. We had only morning to wander around. At 8.30am, we were headed out for breakfast. And decided to have breakfast at the same place we had our dinner the night before.

While walking, I saw my favourite snack - you tiao (fried break stick)!! So, I stopped to buy. One can choose between the spicy chili and sweet paste. I took the sweet paste. So, the fried bread stick is wrapped inside a thin flat bread. The sweet paste is wiped on the fried bread stick, and the fried bread stick is rolled inside the flat bread.

The way to the restaurant. I like the letters. And the 'G' can be swung open!

We were the first customers that morning.

Before I had the noodles, we shared the fried bread stick. It was a bit soft. I think it was left out in the open for too long, hence losing its crunchiness. The sweet paste was yummy. If it was not for the paste, this bread stick will be bland.

One friend here had her own bowl of noodle, but in a smaller bowl. With a big meat inside.

Here comes our ingredients for the noodles. The 3 of us ordered 2 bowls of 'crossing-the-bridge' noodles but with different ingredients.

Now, you can see clearer how big is the bowl.

After breakfast, it was venturing the streets. Look, the 'G' is closed now.

I saw workers exercising in front of their shop. Very good. Very healthy.

Then, we stopped for ice-cream despite it being a chilly weather. It costs RMB4 for a stick.

My friend pointed out that there was a school tucked in between the shops. Good thing it was a primary school, or the shops will be packed with students! Then, it was the walk back to the hotel to catch our ride to the airport.

Look, the hotel we stayed face a row of shops.

We reached the airport at 12pm. Eager I was to see the airport. At the 12th day, I have missed the hot weather so much, and the food in Malaysia. We took Malaysia Airlines back (because Kunming is not in AirAsia), and got the same notice that some luggage (good thing not passengers) will be offloaded due to the weather. Thankfully, our luggage was not affected.

In the plane, I was seated at the last row, and did not get my choice of meals. I was asked between chicken and fish. I wanted the fish, and the air steward told me that the fish is finished, and I had no choice but to take the chicken. I argued because it is so unfair that I was deprived of my choice just because I was seated at the last row. I paid the same price for the flight ticket just like all the economy seat passengers. Well, the air steward could not do anything at 30,000 ft. So, when I reached back home, I emailed the Customer Care and voiced my dissatisfaction. I got the reply after 3 weeks (so much for efficiency in the national carrier) and was assured (supposedly) that my concerns are highlighted to the Food & Beverage Department. I was also explained that a certain amount of meals are served on-board, and if one option becomes the favourite among the passengers, there will definitely be other meal choices (well, duh!). I would suggest that the stewards start their trolleys from opposite ends of the aisle, and not both from one end of the aisle. Then, it will be a fair treatment to all. How could this be an issue anyway? This is an airline that has been in service for 40 years since 1972.

Back to my China trip. Haha! The flight back was for 4 hours, and upon walking out from the plane, I was so happy because I finally felt heat and I sweated!

It had been a beautiful journey. I won't call it my holiday, definitely not a holiday, because it was tiring. Long hours on the road, experiencing high altitude sickness, and trying not to be affected by the cold weather. But it has been a worthy trip. Spectacular. Scenic. Surreal.
