Shangri-la : Part 14 - Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

29 Oct 2012: We are ready to start our tour in Lijiang! And since the morning is less empty compared to the nights, I took the opportunity to snap photos of the landscape. It gets really packed by mid-morning, and you don't see much of an empty spot to snap the scenery.

Old Town of Lijiang is a 5A tourist attraction and part of UNESCO. We have to pay a preservation fee of RMB80. The preservation fee ticket has a serial number which is used for lucky draws and the winners are announced every January 6th and July 6th. So, I am keeping my ticket. The prize is RMB200,000. The Old Town of Lijiang is bigger than the one in Shangri-la.

At 745am, we were called to gather in front of the travel service. There, this guy was announcing our names to ensure everyone was there. We walked to the bus station which was just outside the Old Town of Lijiang  As part of our package, we got an oxygen can (which was not allowed to go through the airport scanner - I tried it, obviously), water and a super thick coat. And the yellow ticket is the preservation ticket.

How to use the oxygen can - Unwrap the plastic. Remove the cover. And attach it to the nozzle. Then, press the nozzle while you breathe in the oxygen. I could not inhale any oxygen because I had flu. So, when I breathe in through my mouth, I exhaled it immediately. Haha!

About an hour and a half later, we reached Yulong (Jade Dragon) Snow Mountain Glacier Geopark. This is a 5A tourist attraction. It was 3356m above sea level. Still okay. So, I thought it was weird the tourists wearing the super thick coat. I guess everyone is getting ready to avoid the hassle of wearing the coats at the top. So, we did the same.

We queued up to take the cable car to the peak of the snow mountain. This ropeway to the peak was applauded by an Italian ropeway expert, Mr Martin Leitner and in his own words - This is a wonder.

This ropeway is the highest in the world. Also, the construction took place 7 months in a year due to severe winter weather, and was completed after 2.5 years. According to the signboard, due to the treacherous terrain, the components were carried by man or small machinery.

It was a 10 minute ride up the 2968m length. And at the peak, it was 7 degrees.

The peak was at 4506m. Thankfully, there was sun! So, the chill is not that bad. Plus with the super thick coat, I felt really warm. And I looked really huge.

Ta-da! Jade Dragon Snow Mountain! The pathway where people will walk up to the highest spot on the left. I walked midway due to time constraint as we needed to get back in time to watch Lijiang Impressions. Plus, I could not walk fast as I needed to catch my breath (and inhale from the oxygen can) while walking up about 12 steps. 12 only!!! *super fail*

Then, we took the cable down at 10.15am. We are supposed to be in the bus by 10.40am.

In the cable, I snapped our reflection against this lady's glasses. She thought I was snapping her photo and she tilted her head, and I told her to put it straight because I was taking our photo. Hehe.

At 10.30am, we were back at the bottom. It was not that cold anymore. We entered the cafetaria. I was so hungry and the smell of the food was not helping. I told myself to ignore ignore, because I had not much monies left.

Next place - Lijiang Impressions!
