Gopeng : Gua Kandu & Gua Sanding - Dusty Caves

I am back after a month off! I went on my greatest adventure of the year - to Everest Base Camp in Nepal! I will write about it in the next entry. I just finished uploading the photos in Facebook, and with captions too. So, it takes some hours to complete a photo album.

13102013 - Today, I went caving. This is my caving activity for the 2nd time. It is a new thing for me, hence, my keenness to see the various caves in Malaysia, which is within my budget and my capability too. Today's caving is to Gua Kandu and Gua Sanding located in Gopeng, Perak. It was not a tough walk in the cave. Not too difficult. Just have to watch the steps within the cave as it is dark (very duh!). I paid RM60 to join this activity, which is organised by an adventure club in Facebook.

I drove the night before to Gopeng. It took me slightly more than 2 hours, and I reached about 1am. From Gopeng exit, we turned right, and drove in about 200 metres to reach our homestay. It was my first time staying in one. I paid RM25 for a night stay. The house is huge. The girls slept upstairs and the boys slept downstairs. You can cook in the house too.

At 9am, we departed from the homestay to the cave. It was less than 7 minutes' drive to the cave. The entrance to the cave was slightly less than 50m from the homestay. It is that near! And the entrance to the cave was about a 5 minute drive. There was a signboard to show the direction. We parked our cars at Kandu Eco Adventure which is just after the turn from the signboard.

Each one of us has to wear a helmet.

Group photo before we start our caving activity.

We walked to the entrance of the cave. It was about a 3 minute walk. At the entrance of the cave, our guide briefed us a bit on the history of the cave. Gua Kandu started its formation since 500 million years ago. He told us of the stalactites and stalagmites. When I asked where is the border of Gua Kandu, and Gua Sanding, he mentioned that actually this is one cave, and the locals just gave various names within Gua Kandu.

It was unfortunate that on the walls of the cave were scribbled by senseless people who wanted to declare their love to the partners.

Inside the cave, I hit my head on the rock many times. Hence, the need to use a helmet. Compared to Gua Batu Maloi which is located in Negeri Sembilan, this cave is dry. There is water but more of small puddles. The place is very dusty. The similar thing between these 2 caves is that we have to use ropes.

I love my reflection in the cave. I told my friend to beam their headlamp at me.

The ropes are very secured and attached to the rock.

We reached the exit of the cave after 1.5 hours. It was actually a small cave. It was just that we stopped a lot to snap photos and since there were 28 of us, we had to wait in line when walking through narrow paths or using the rope. The exit is at Gua Sanding.

The view from where we took our group photo. We can actually go down the cave from here, but the guide did not bring the safety harness, and hence, we walked through the cave, but on a different route towards the exit.

At 12pm, we were officially out from the cave. Then, we went down among some trees. It was muddy, and hence slippery too. There was a rope for us to hold on to as we walked down.

We got out from the mini jungle and ended back on the road.

We did a little rock climbing and had a small group photo. We did it hurriedly, as the guide will not be pleased that we were doing it without any safety harness.

That is all. The end.
